Health Screenings & Selecting Our Breeding Pairs

When breeding purebred Dachshunds, it’s essential to prioritize the health of both the breeding pairs and their puppies. Here are the common health screenings we conduct:

1.Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) Awareness

IVDD is a condition that can affect Dachshunds due to their long backs, potentially causing pain or mobility issues. We carefully evaluate all breeding dogs and avoid pairing those with a history of spinal problems, reducing the risk of affected puppies.

2.Eye Examination

Dachshunds can be prone to hereditary eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). We have both parents examined regularly by certified veterinary ophthalmologists to ensure they are free from inherited eye diseases.

3.Hip Evaluation

Although less common, hip dysplasia can still occur in Dachshunds. We ensure that both parents undergo proper evaluation to assess joint health and mobility before breeding.

4.Patellar Luxation Screening

Dachshunds may be prone to patellar luxation, where the kneecap shifts out of place. We have both parents evaluated to ensure proper alignment and reduce the risk of passing this condition to puppies.

5.Elbow Evaluation

While rare, elbow issues can occur. We assess elbow health to ensure strong joint function and reduce the likelihood of inherited concerns.

6.Cardiac Evaluation

Heart health is important in any breeding program. We screen breeding dogs for congenital heart conditions through veterinary examinations to ensure they are not predisposed to cardiac issues.

7.Skin Health Assessment

Dachshunds can sometimes develop skin sensitivities or allergies. We carefully review the skin health and history of both parents, avoiding breeding dogs with chronic conditions.

8.Genetic Testing Panel

We perform comprehensive DNA testing for breed-specific genetic conditions and to confirm parentage. This supports responsible breeding decisions and helps maintain strong, healthy bloodlines.

9.General Health Check

A complete veterinary examination is conducted to assess the overall health of both parents. This includes checking for illness, ensuring vaccinations are up to date, verifying proper body condition, and reviewing medical history.

10.Temperament Evaluation

Beyond physical health, we carefully assess temperament. Dachshunds should be confident, friendly, and well-balanced. We only breed dogs with stable temperaments to ensure puppies inherit the breed’s affectionate and loyal nature.
